What is Wellness Anyway?

Wellness is the state of optimal well-being, not simply the absence of illness, but an improved quality of life resulting from enhanced physical, emotional and spiritual health. There are some fundamentals of wellness:

Self-responsibility: you must take responsibility for taking care of your own wellness
Holistic: wellness integrates the body, mind and spirit
Journey: there is no absolute level of wellness, it is a constant journey
Balance: you need to attend to all aspects of your wellness to create a balance in your life
Uniqueness: each person’s road to wellness is as unique as the individual
Time: it requires time and effort on your part, today

Often people associate physical health with wellness. Actually, physical health is only one of the dimensions of wellness. Here are the different dimensions of health that we recognize:

Physical - striving toward optimal health and fitness with a proactive lifestyle: physical activity, recreation, nutrition, weight-management, smoke-free living, medical self-care, self-exams, appropriate use of medical care and chemical (drugs and alcohol) control.
Social/Environmental - responsible and cooperative interaction with the world around us: family, relationship building, communication, family planning, friends, social support building, community involvement, volunteerism, safety, and pollution control.
Spiritual - exploring the meaning and purpose in life: values, ethics, love, friendship, kindness, forgiveness, charity, trust, and gratitude.
Emotional - recognizing one’s feeling s and relating to others positively: goal-setting, personal planning, expression of feelings, assertiveness, and stress management.
Intellectual - stimulating the mind and creatively using resources available to expand knowledge: education, continuing education, libraries, reading and cultural activities.
Occupational - striving for fulfillment in one’s life through work: career planning, continuing training, leadership training, decision making time management, and retirement planning.
